Welcome to Steam — Where to Begin

Steam is the world's largest PC gaming platform, home to tens of thousands of games, a vibrant community, and powerful tools for players and developers alike. If you're brand new, getting started can feel overwhelming — but it's actually quite straightforward once you know the steps.

Step 1: Download and Install the Steam Client

Head to store.steampowered.com and click the "Install Steam" button in the top-right corner. The installer is small (around 3 MB) and will download the rest of the client automatically. Steam is available for:

  • Windows (7, 8, 10, 11)
  • macOS (10.13 or later)
  • Linux (Ubuntu, Debian, and other major distributions)

Once installed, launch the application and you'll be greeted with the login/create account screen.

Step 2: Create Your Account

Click "Create a New Account" and fill in your email address, a unique username, and a strong password. A few things to keep in mind:

  • Your account name (username) cannot be changed later — choose wisely.
  • Your profile name (display name) can be changed at any time.
  • Use a real, accessible email address — you'll need it for verification and account recovery.

Steam will send a verification email. Click the link inside to activate your account.

Step 3: Enable Steam Guard (Two-Factor Authentication)

Security is critical on Steam because your account holds your entire game library. Enable Steam Guard immediately:

  1. Go to Steam > Settings > Account in the top menu.
  2. Click "Manage Steam Guard Account Security".
  3. Choose either email-based codes or the Steam Mobile Authenticator (recommended — available on iOS and Android).

The mobile authenticator is the most secure option and also enables Steam trading features.

Step 4: Set Up Your Profile

Your Steam profile is your public identity on the platform. To customize it:

  • Click your username in the top-right and select "Profile".
  • Click "Edit Profile" to add an avatar, bio, and featured games.
  • Set your privacy settings — you can control who sees your games, playtime, and wishlist.

Step 5: Install Your First Game

Browse the Steam Store using the search bar or curated sections (New Releases, Top Sellers, Free to Play). Once you find a game:

  1. Click "Add to Cart" and proceed to checkout, or click "Play Game" if it's free.
  2. After purchase, the game appears in your Library.
  3. Click "Install", choose your install location, and Steam handles the rest.

Useful Tips for New Users

  • Wishlist games you're interested in — Steam will notify you when they go on sale.
  • Check the system requirements on any game page before buying.
  • Steam has a refund policy: you can refund a game played for less than 2 hours within 14 days of purchase.
  • Download the Steam mobile app to manage your library and confirm trades on the go.

You're Ready to Play

With your account created, secured, and your first game installed, you're fully set up on Steam. Explore the platform at your own pace — there's always more to discover, from community features to seasonal sales to thousands of free-to-play titles.
